Bonitas – Ongoing Rejection of Contraceptive Claims Despite IUD Removal

In February 2025, I had an IUD inserted as my contraceptive method. Due to complications, it was removed on 8 October 2025, after which my doctor prescribed Qlaira birth control.

Since October 2025, all claims for Qlaira have been incorrectly rejected, citing a conflict with an “existing contraceptive method.” As a result, I have been paying cash for this medication.

On 17 January 2026, another claim was rejected. A query logged with Bonitas was closed without resolution. Upon follow-up, I was advised that the doctor had only claimed for a consultation and not the IUD removal. I was instructed to obtain confirmation from the doctor, which was provided and submitted to Bonitas immediately.

As of 28 January 2026, there has been no feedback or resolution, despite this confirmation being submitted over 10 days ago. My medication has now run out, and I am unable to access essential contraceptive care due to Bonitas’ administrative failure.

This situation poses serious health and financial risks. Contraception is a basic healthcare benefit, and members should not be penalised due to internal claim processing errors.

Resolution requested: I request immediate correction of my records, approval of my contraceptive claims with backdated reimbur*****t, and urgent access to my medication. Should Bonitas be unable to cover contraceptive care, I request written confirmation to enable me to move to a medical aid that does.

As of Friday, 30 January, there has been no feedback or communication from Bonitas. Failing to provide even a basic update reflects poor service standards. I expect an immediate response and resolution.

I have now called the Bonitas call centre for the third time, at my own cost. Once again, I am told the issue is being escalated and that I must wait another week resulting in yet another week without my contraceptive pills.
This is unacceptable service. Women should not be subjected to this level of neglect for basic contraceptives. Being told I cannot claim if I pay out of pocket makes this even worse.
I want clear answers and an urgent resolution.
