Bonitas Medical Aid Review – Debit Order Failure and Denial of Chronic Medication
Bonitas Medical Aid Review – Debit Order Failure and Denial of Chronic Medication
I am extremely disappointed with the way Bonitas has handled a debit order and membership suspension issue.
On 7 September 2026, I contacted Bonitas after noticing that the funds intended for my monthly debit order had not been deducted. I was informed that Bonitas Finance was experiencing problems with its debit order system and was advised to make payment via EFT.
I paid R9,200 into the Bonitas account on 8 September 2026 and immediately emailed proof of payment to the relevant Bonitas email addresses. I received confirmation that my query had been logged under reference number ***, with an undertaking that I would receive feedback within three working days.
Despite making the payment, I received an email that evening informing me that my membership had been suspended. I subsequently contacted Bonitas and was informed that the suspension had been lifted. However, when I went to my pharmacy to collect my chronic medication, I was told that my account was still suspended and that the claims were being rejected.
I have since spoken to at least three Bonitas call centre agents, all of whom confirmed that my membership was active. Nevertheless, the pharmacy continued to experience rejected claims. I have now been unable to take my chronic medication since 10 September 2026.
What is particularly unacceptable is that Bonitas agents appear to regard the matter as resolved simply because the membership is reflected as active on their systems. This does not address the actual problem: my pharmacy claims are still being rejected, and I cannot access essential chronic medication.
This has been an extremely stressful and unacceptable experience. Bonitas’ internal debit order, payment-processing and membership systems should not result in members being denied access to essential medical treatment. The lack of effective escalation and communication has compounded the problem.
Bonitas needs to urgently resolve these internal system and administrative failures, ensure that my payment is correctly allocated, reinstate access to my benefits across all relevant systems, and ensure that my pharmacy claims are processed without further delay.
