Bonitas fails to honor benefits on its plan and use its DECLINE departments to hide behind

I am deeply disappointed and concerned by the way Bonitas has handled this matter. It appears that Bonitas has a dedicated process that prioritises declining authorisations for critical medical procedures, even when members have paid for these benefits. My wife is a beneficiary on my Bonitas Primary plan, and a PET Scan that falls under her oncology benefit has been declined by the scheme. Given her current severe pain and the overwhelming impact of her cancer diagnosis, timely access to this scan is critical. However, instead of receiving meaningful support, we have only received a lengthy decline letter that provides very little useful information or recourse. I have made several attempts to engage with Bonitas to resolve this issue: Telephonically: My first call went unanswered. Via the Bonitas chatbox: I was placed in a queue as position 72. Via email (sent on 7 and 8 April 2026): I have received no response to date.

What is particularly concerning is the apparent lack of urgency, empathy, and due care shown by Bonitas towards its members , especially in emergency or time sensitive medical situations. The standard responses (long decline letters, long call centre queues, and automated email acknowledgements) do little to assist members when rapid resolution is needed. As a loyal, paying member, I expected far better service and support from my medical aid, particularly when dealing with a serious oncology case.

Hello Pravinash

Thank you for reaching out to us via hellopeter.

We confirm that detailed correspondence regarding the declined PET/CT scan has been sent to you. We trust that this communication has addressed your concerns and that the matter is now resolved.

Please be advised that funding may be considered for a conventional MRI or CT scan. In addition, a detailed letter of motivation from the treating provider may be submitted for further clinical assessment.

Should you require any further assistance or clarification, please do not hesitate to contact Hospital Benefit Management (HBM).

Kind regards,

 Bonitas Team

Reviewer Update
Greetings, that's the problem. I have the cover, i have the benefit and yet its declines with a detailed letter that tell you nothing. Now i am advised by Bonitas that i must do MRI or CT scan and in addition a detailed letter of motivation from the treating provider may be submitted for further clinical assessment. This is not in good faith of honoring the benefits, rather its window dressing on the Brocher as a sales tactic and then does not offer that, rather suggest something else as non-medical officials. Very dis-appointing and this will be taken to the medical council.
