Bonitas Failing a Seriously Ill Member When She Needs Help Most

I am extremely disappointed and frustrated by the treatment my mother has received from Bonitas over the past two weeks.

On 25 May 2026, my mother presented at hospital with a medical condition. Despite having hospital cover, she was denied admission. We were advised that further tests would be required, yet these tests were also declined by Bonitas, forcing me to pay out of pocket for medical expenses that should have been covered under her medical aid benefits.

After finally being able to see a specialist, it was determined that she requires surgery, which was scheduled for 9 June 2026. However, we have now been informed telephonically that the surgery has been declined.

What is even more concerning is the manner in which this has been handled. During the call, the consultant simply ended the conversation without providing a proper explanation or assistance. We have since spent more than an hour waiting on hold trying to obtain clarity, while my mother remains in severe pain and her condition continues to affect her quality of life.

My mother has been ill for over two weeks and has endured unnecessary suffering because of delays, declined authorisations, poor communication, and a complete lack of urgency. We pay substantial medical aid premiums with the expectation that medically necessary treatment will be available when it is needed most. Instead, we have faced obstacle after obstacle while my mother's health deteriorates.

At this stage, I am asking:

• Why was hospital admission declined despite her having hospital cover and presenting with a new condition? • Why were medically necessary diagnostic tests not authorised? • Why has an urgently required surgery been declined? • Why are members expected to wait for extended periods without receiving meaningful assistance or explanations?

Bonitas' handling of this matter has been deeply distressing for our family. No member should have to fight this hard for access to healthcare while a loved one is suffering.

I urgently request that Bonitas review this case, provide a full explanation for the decisions made, and resolve this matter before my mother's condition worsens further.

Should Bonitas fail to provide a satisfactory response, I will have no option but to escalate this matter to the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS). I have retained copies of all authorisation requests, test results, invoices, specialist reports, and supporting medical documentation relating to this case. Given the financial and emotional burden that has already been placed on our family, I believe this matter warrants independent review to determine whether benefits that should have been covered were incorrectly declined.

I sincerely hope Bonitas addresses this matter urgently and compassionately before my mother's condition deteriorates any further.
