Failure for body lab to detail their clients when it comes from contracts.

I was approached by one of body lab's workers in Kempton park and was told that I get a month free of working out in the gym if I sign a contract. I didn't even go to the gym, not even once and i did not even register my fingerprints at the gym. After a month or two there was a debit order from body lab of R178 and I called them and tried to cancel the contract because I thought it was for free for that month. They never explained to me that I had signed a contract for a year, they also told me that they will call me and ask if I would like to continue with my contract after the one month free but I never received any call from them and after I got a debit order from them I called them to cancel the contract and they said I'd have to pay 30% of the cancellation fee of which I was never told off. Firstly I am a student and I am not working I did not receive any source of income and I'm unable to pay the amount. I now get calls and messages from their lawyers telling me to pay an amount of 1,300 and there are also additional cost every month . I don't have the kind money as I am still a student and do not receive any source of income. Again I was told by one of their work's when I called that if I cancel the contract the same day I call them then I wouldn't have to pay the cancellation fee and I did just that. I find it very disappointing that workers do not explain every detail to clients and their failure to do so cost us as clients. I hope I will receive the help that I need. Thank you.
