Toyota Gezina Sold Me a Defective Car

Bought my Hilux SRX from Gezina back in October 2022. Since day 1 it had issues and while Gezina was initially willing to assist with some of the repair costs, as soon as 6 months had passed, they dropped me like a hot potato. I should have returned the car during those first 6 months.

My problems have been extensive and unfortunately expensive with this vehicle. The latest issue is that it just stopped starting up all together, and then when you do get it started it will often cut out on you mid drive. Finally Toyota Malelane were able to diagnose the problem for me - two aftermarket performance chips had been installed in my Hilux. These chips cause absolute havoc to any car and ultimately destroy your fuel injectors in the long run.

I am appalled that even after Toyota's supposedly stringent "101 point Automark check" that they didn't find this before they sold it on to me. Or the scenario I fear even more is that they were aware of it, and still sold me the vehicle.

Frankly it's not what you would expect when dealing with a supposedly reputable Toyota dealership.

I hope my story helps other future buyers at Toyota Gezina to be less likely to part with their hard earned money. They are a bunch of **** artists.

Good day Cole,

We are really sorry to hear about the problems on your vehicle. Unfortunately performance chips hidden underneath the passenger seat is not something that our 101 check prior to the sale of a used vehicle will pick up. It will only become known once you really start to look for abnormalities in vehicle performance as a standard check through an intelligence tester will not flag its presence as an error.

I have made contact with the previous owner who traded your Hilux in on his new Hilux back in 2022 - he also did not know about any performance enhancements in the vehicle at the time. He mentioned that he only had the vehicle for about 2 years before he decided it was time to trade it in around 220 000km.

Being a 2011 model, unfortunately the vehicle have had numerous owners - and the owner that installed the performance chip, never told the next owner - making it impossible to really know about it. Us, as the dealership will not carry knowledge of everything that happened to that vehicle in its existence, unless it was something fitted by our dealership or clearly visible with the naked eye.

We have been more than willing to assist you after your initial purchase of the vehicle in October 2022. The work that was conducted (aircon unit short circuiting; clutch fail; stabilizer link; prop shaft u-joint) were none related to power - which is why we would never have looked further to discover the performance chips.

Your case at the Ombudsman has been closed and finalised since May 2023 and you have declined our offer to buy the vehicle back then - so we honestly have tried all avenues to assist when we last had contact.

I truly hope that the removal of this performance enhancement will be the end of the problems with your vehicle.

I am really offended by your comment stating we are "************" - we pride ourselves in our jobs and have been selling new and pre-owned vehicles for almost 50 years in Gezina. We are a proud Toyota dealership with transparency in the core of our existence - I promise you, we did not carry knowledge of the chips - if we did, it would have been removed prior to the sale as performance enhancements is not something we allow in our vehicles.

Kind regards,

Jana Policar
