Unreasonable time to withold a deposit - 45 days!!

We pre- booked a car to hire on Saturday 18th February 2017 and took out an insurance policy to cover the excess in the event of an accident. When we came to hire the car in Cape Town the company insisted that, not only did we have to sign an indemnity, but we pay a deposit of R5000.00 for a mere two-day hire. We explained that we didn't want to buy the vehicle, just rent it, but they were adamant and on top of it insisted on freezing my card for up to 45 days for that amount. Now 45 days is 9 weeks or 2 months and is COMPLETELY UNREASONABLE and just another way to make interest out of the customers money.

We returned the car two days later with the tank full and not a scratch on it anywhere as would have been expected.

We do regret that our authorisation amount seems excessive considering the value of the asset our Customers drive away in. The amount is not paid over to us but merely held in our favour and therefore no interest is gained or charged.

We can also confirm that we do not offer full cover and you therefore remain responsible for settlement of liabilities due in the event of an accident. A claim must then be lodged with the broker / insurer the policy was purchased from and the costs refunded to you.

We will trace your transaction in the morning and get in touch with our credit card merchants to release the hold on your credit card and do apologise for any inconvenience caused by any misunderstanding of the terms and conditions.

Regards,

The Customer Care Team
