Rip-off car rental with extra costs and hidden fees

I recently discovered that Bidvest also offered car rental. They were conveniently located and ostensibly offered Group A car rental at greatly reduced prices. In fact, they were even more affordable than Tempest and Thrifty. What I disliked about this company was the fact that they insisted that the person who was paying for the rental also had to produce a valid driver's licence -- which zero no sense, since I was paying for my partner to have a rental vehicle for a week. However, it was only once we returned the vehicle and Bidvest refunded my deposit that things became clear. Not only had they added R500 extra for half a tank of petrol, but also an additional R450 for a "second driver". None of this had been explained to me at the time of renting and so the final cost of renting that little Nissan Micra had escalated from R146 per day to more than R400 a day! Steer clear!
