Money was the issue

I did an online car rental booking, on the site http://georgeairportcarrental.com/. and there it only told me I'll have to pay a premium of ±R900 for four days all together. And I was fine with that. But when I arrived at the George airport, going to the car rental company Bidvest Car Rental, then they told me they'll have to freeze R4500 for insurance. I didn't have that much funds available, I told the guy who helped me that there wasn't anything written like that in the terms and conditions of the car rental, and he brushed it off like it was a fly.

Now the worst part is, my spouse and I had to phone his mum to borrow some money from her, just so that we can "give" that money to them.

I wouldn't have minded to pay that ridiculous amount if I only was aware of it, I would've budgeted for that. The fact of the matter is, I didn't know about that insane amount, I didn't budget for that, and we spent our holiday doing absolutely nothing, just because they took that amount we would have used for our holiday.

I am quite upset about it, just because it was our first time in George, and we couldn't even see the sites there was to see. And also that it'll take fourty days before I can get my money back, but they can freeze my money in an instant??

We do most sincerely apologise that you did not note the authorisation requirement on the terms and conditions supp**** by the broker. Our risk is enormous as we hand over an asset of high value, in this instance R149 000.00. We merely reserve R4500.00 on your credit card to cover additional mileage driven, fuel or any other incidentals. The quotes are clear and should you find it was not, kindly forward a copy of all the correspondence received from the broker to *** and we will investigate and rectify with them.

Our authorisation figures are based on statistical risk information and although we understand that terms and conditions are not always read by consumers, we unfortunately cannot be held responsible for such an omission.

We would not intentionally disappoint and do most sincerely regret that the process was not clear or understood upfront. Your continued custom is extremely important to us and we therefore thank you for giving us this opportunity to share some of the complexities and realities of our industry with you.

Kind regards.

The Customer Care Team

Thank you for the reply, and let me ask: Why in the living hell did you deduct another R1000 today? I don't know what's that for, I would have liked to have known I'm going to lose more money due to specific reasons. And if it's an unnecessary deduction, then I would have liked to defended that. What if I didn't have that amount available in my account?

PS. I sent the email of the rental agreement

We have not deducted another R1000.00 - we billed the final total of R995.35 to your credit card and the initial authorisation taken will now be released. We can confirm that once the reversal has been requested, the initial R4500.00 should be available to you either immediately or within 24 hours, depending on your credit card issuer.

The attachment forwarded to us relates to the additional damage cover and not the initial rental confirmation. You would have received another e-mail relating to the rental period only. However when you click on this attachment and go onto the Internet link provided, there is a notation that states:

IMPORTANT NOTE: The supplier of the rental vehicle may require a security bond in the form of an imprint, credit card preauthorisation, or physical deduction at the time of pick up. This bond is refundable when the vehicle is returned in satisfactory condition. These policies do not negate the need to pay any such required bond.

We do regret that this process has caused so much confusion and once you find the initial e-mail confirming the reservation and not the additional cover taken, you will note the requirement is explained. We do trust the matter will be resolved to your complete satisfaction in the shortest possible space of time.

Kind regards,

The Customer Care Team
