Charged for a damaged tyre and CHARGED TWICE!

Bidvest PE Airport: When we returned the vehicle, the guy walked straight to the front left tyre and indicated damage to the tyre. We made a statement indicating that we were NOT aware of ANY tyre damage. Yet, we were charged. When I received notification that payment has gone through, I called several times to speak to the PE airport office. I told them IF we damaged the tyre, we would gladly pay for it.

Response? ‘It does not mean bad driving – the state of the roads are to blame and you may take this issue up with SANRAL (National Roads Agency)’. Really?! How convenient - the previous party that ruled PE and Jeffrey’s Bay is no longer in power!

Google search indicates

If my car gets damaged while I’m driving due to road works / potholes, can I claim from the government?

Yes, however in order to establish who you can claim from for pothole damage / damage as a result of road works you need to establish if you are driving on a National Road / Municipal Road. National roads are commonly identified as N1, N2 Etc. These roads are the responsibility of the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) whereas municipal roads would fall under the authority of the various municipal districts or the Department of Public Works were those roads are located. SANRAL contracts with road works companies to maintain these roads, and they have to provide proof that they have an insurance policy in place to cover claims for liability from road users. Claims for damages from potholes / road works on National Roads are therefore directed to SANRAL and from there to the specific contractor on that stretch of road. The SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) confirms that claims are processed like any other car insurance claim if it could be proved that the damage occurred as a result of road works / pothole damage. On the Municipal roads– the road users would have to approach that specific municipal authority or Department of Public Works and enquire from them which documentation to complete, and to whom to submit such a claim.

Information required would include:

Your ID Document

Your Driver’s License

The Registration Details of your Vehicle

3 Written quotes for repair

A Declaration signed by the claimant

We would like to suggest that the vehicle owner also provide proof through photos of the pothole and the damage to the vehicle.

This means Bidvest needs to provide me with 3 written quotes as well as proof (photos) before I can claim the 895 for the tyre.

We collected the vehicle at PE airport on 2016-8-25 and stayed overnight at a guest house in PE. The following morning we travelled to Jeffrey’s Bay and returned on 2016-9-2. We used both national and municipal roads:

N2

Marine Drive PE

Victoria Dr/M18 PE

Exit 676 from N2

St Francis St.

Nautilus St

How am I supposed to establish if it was a national or municipal road that damaged the tyre??????

Regarding Bidvest ‘special’ - rent for 7 days and pay for 5 & rent for 11 days and pay for 8: When I queried why we did not receive any discount, I was told the special expired 2016-5-3. YET, each time I called the Bidvest number regarding the repair charges, they STILL advertised the special rates - that is why I queried it. If the offer is no longer available, it means it is false advertising. I’ve had NO response to this since my mail of 2016-9-9.

When I checked my WW app on Saturday, I noticed that Bidvest has in fact deducted the invoice of 2236 TWICE on 2016-9-7: Port Elizabeth -2236 & Isando -2236. My available balance on the credit card confirms this. Today is 5 days later. What nonsense is this?

As for being one of ABSA REWARDS Partners, your service really sucks.

I will spread the word and NEVER use Bidvest Car Rental EVER again.

We acknowledge receipt of your complaint and do most sincerely regret that you found our service standards to be lacking.

Tyre damage is a reality that we have to manage very strictly to ensure the safety of our customers and although SANRAL (who are a Government Agency responsible to the government of the day and not the ruling party) are responsible for the maintenance of our roads, you are only able to claim when you do know the exact point of impact. The suggestion from our staff member related to your enquiry regarding who could possibly be held responsible for this cost.

Our rates are subject to change without notice and we can confirm that the rate you personally reserved on the Internet, was honoured as quoted. The offer you refer to is not valid currently and we would not have been able to apply it retrospectively either. The message on our answering service has been checked for accuracy and we do apologise for any inconvenience caused in this regard and do point out that terms and conditions apply to any advertorial information.

Our credit card merchants have confirmed that the authorisation taken (for the final billing amount) was pending despite the debit having been raised and met. Unfortunately this is a banking process which differs from issuer to issuer and we have requested the immediate release of this hold. Should the amount not reflect in your available balance within 24 hours, kindly contact our Customer Care team or your credit card issuer for assistance.

Finally we want to thank for taking the time to share your concerns with us on such a public platform and giving us an opportunity to explain our position in this regard. We do realise that our response may not be what you prefer but we are confident that our team dealt with your approach professionally and that our conduct reflects our genuine desire to find an amicable solution at all times and wherever possible, to retain your support.

Regards,

Bidvest Car Rental – Customer Care Team

We unfortunately do not take photographs or obtain 3 quotes on a tyre replacement and multiple quotes are normally only required when lodging a claim for body damage. The registration is DZ50KRGP.

Kind regards,

The Customer Care Team

Surely if the tyre was damaged beyond repair, one would expect to see evidence of such damage ?

We did NOT go through any potholes, nor did we damage the tyre.

I would like to claim from SANRAL and / or Jeffrey's Bay Municipality.

I am not going to stop PESTERING Bidvest until such time I get what I asked for.
