BestMed? WorstMed? NoMed?

For anyone who is thinking about switching to, or joining this medical aid - please think very carefully about that. They do not offer any kind of value for your premium. Unless you're healthy, young and unlikely to claim.

I understand the reasons for a loaded premium on a late-joiner basis. But when is a hospital plan not a hospital plan? I am not a new member, and I do not have an undeclared preexisting condition. Extremely disappointed with finding out that Bestmed only cover a hip replacement on some of their plans. Really? Who has this kind of procedure for fun?

 Dear Julie

Thank you for sharing your concerns.

We understand that joint replacement surgery is a significant medical procedure and can have a considerable impact on a member's quality of life. However, benefits are determined by the specific plan option selected and the applicable Scheme Rules.

Joint replacement surgery is covered on Pace 2, Pace 3, and Pace 4, subject to:
  • Pre-authorisation;
  • Clinical assessment and approval; and
  • Applicable benefit and prosthesis limits.

On lower plan options, including Beat 1, joint replacement surgery is excluded unless the condition qualifies for funding under Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs). PMB funding is subject to meeting the relevant PMB requirements, as well as applicable prosthesis limits.

We encourage members to review their benefit schedule and plan exclusions carefully.

Should you require assistance in understanding your cover or exploring alternative plan options, please contact Bestmed, and we will gladly assist.

Kind regards,
Bestmed Medical Scheme
