Bestmed aka Worstmed

I have been with Bestmed for many years, since 2012. I always found them to be "okay" compared to other medical schemes. This year it just feels like the new rule at Bestmed is: "Never pay for anything ever and if we need to pay make life as difficult as humanly possible for the member". My wife was admitted to hospital a month ago and had to get a CT scan. Some new scheme rule now requires me to copay pretty much the full amount, which means they pay pretty much nothing. (Every year we pay more and get less) And to make it worse, my wife has to go back for a procedure, but for some reason Bestmed thinks that they have better understanding of the medical sciences than the specialist that examined her, so they constantly decline procedures specified by the specialist saying that according to them it is not required. And this is without ever examining the patient. This means that I now have an additional admin burden to try and get the specialist to do additional admin in trying to convince Bestmed that he (the specialist) actually knows what he is doing and that these procedures are indeed required. In the mean time my wife is suffering because she cannot get the required treatment, which we had to postpone twice already because of this nonsense. The absolute audacity of Bestmed to tell the specialist that he is wrong and the patient does not require recommended treatment. The way things are going, I will be leaving Bestmed for a different medical aid end of the year. And I know what the response here will be: "sorry to hear about your problems, but it is in accordance with scheme rules", so I don't expect a reply from Bestmed I am posting this as a warning to other potential would be memebers thinking of joining bestmed.

 Dear Mr Van Heerden

Thank you for your review and for bringing this issue with the hospital to our attention. We are sorry to hear about your experience.

We will be forwarding the rejected codes related to the authorisation granted for 13 May to the clinical Committee team for re-evaluation. Once reviewed, they will provide further feedback.

 Kind regards
 GM

Reviewer Update
After the previous post, the doctor submitted the required clinical report, and again bestmed declined almost everything. I am at my wits end, it seems like there is nothing more I can do so my wife will not be getting this much needed procedure. So much for being "covered" by a medical aid, thanks a lot bestmed. To add insult to injury, bestmed requested the clinical report to be submitted, the doctor wrote the report and sent it to bestmed, the doctor then charged R430 for this report and bestmed refuses to pay for it. Please note that this report was a requirement from bestmed, not something I wanted or needed. So not only is bestmed depriving my wife from a much needed procedure, I now need to pay for the report which I refuse to do, if bestmed has any decency and pride as an organization they will at least pay this report.

Dear  Mr Van Heerden
Thank you for your query.
Please note that we do not reimburse costs associated with the writing of special motivations for procedures. This is because such documentation is considered part of the healthcare provider's administrative responsibilities and not a medically necessary service rendered to the patient.
Best regards,
 GM
