Extremely Disappointing Experience – Hidden Costs, Poor Accommodation and Unprofessional Service
We booked Berchtesgaden Game Ranch & Lifestyle Farm in February 2026 specifically because we were quoted an excellent price on an Eland bull. Unfortunately, this turned out to be one of the worst hunting experiences we have had. To start with, the accommodation was nowhere near what we expected from a place advertised as a 4-star establishment. The chalet was disappointing, and the bedding was visibly dirty on our first night. Even though our booking had been made months in advance, extra beds were only carried into the chalet after our arrival, making it seem as though our reservation had not been properly prepared. The owner's attitude throughout our stay left a lot to be desired. While we were sitting around the braai, we were told, "Please don't sit too close because the fire is going to burn my chairs." Being spoken to like children while trying to enjoy our evening was unnecessary and unprofessional. The biggest issue, however, was the billing. Almost everything comes with an extra charge, and while we had the available price list, we were never informed that an updated price list existed. This became a very expensive surprise. When settling our account for the Eland and Impala harvested on Saturday, we noticed several unexpected charges: A shooting stick ("skietstok") was added to our account, despite us using our own equipment. The Eland suddenly cost R8,000 more than the price that had been discussed when we booked. The Impala ended up costing almost R4,000, which was extremely expensive for the size of the animal. We were also charged a Sunday slaughter fee, even though the Eland was shot at approximately 16:55 on Saturday. We even assisted with the recovery of the animal, and the fact that it only reached the slaughter facilities later that evening was completely outside of our control. We had no choice but to pay before leaving, despite disputing these charges. If we had known beforehand that an Eland would ultimately cost us close to R30,000, we would have booked at a far better hunting lodge with much better accommodation and service. This experience left us feeling misled, overcharged and extremely disappointed. We will not be returning, and unfortunately, we cannot recommend Berchtesgaden Game Ranch & Lifestyle Farm to anyone looking for an honest, transparent and enjoyable hunting experience.
