Bad business and backup service, bordering on dishonesty
Earlier in 2017, I bought a car battery from Battery Doctor. They promised only a 1-year guarantee on thisTaurus battery, because they said it is an older version of the Exide batteries, made in India and these older type of batteries do not have 2-year guarantees like the newer types. I bought the battery based upon their assurance that this is actually an Exide with a different name and because it was on a weekend and no other battery supplier could be found in Rustenburg to be open. On 27December2017, my car failed to start. I took the battery to a service centre to test, but they found it to be supplying a strong current. Then I suspected the starter motor and had the car taken to an auto electrician. They checked everything for half a day and found no wiring or starter problem. Eventually they tested the battery again under load and drove around with the car. After this they found the car did not start. Upon closer investigation, they found the battery to have a severe internal fault that was intermittent, depending on the movement of the car. They replaced it with a new Exide battery with a 2-year guarantee and charged me for the hours' labour. I enquired about taking thew old battery to Battery Doctor or Battery Doctor enquiring from the auto electrician about the findings. I was told that a old battery fee of R200 was payable, should I want to have the old battery. Immediately thereafter I went to Battery Doctor to enquire about the guarantee. There was a boy on duty at the sales counter. Upon hearing my query, he looked as if he could not easily suppress his amu*****t. He wanted to see the new battery, then asked to see the old battery. I told him of the R200 fee and that the auto electricians will keep the old battery for 2 days for inspection. He insisted that I provide the old battery so they could run some tests for 24 hours, upon which results the head office will determine whether to give me a new battery. I asked that since I already have a new battery, what I should do with another new battery and what else they could offer. He insisted that I would only receive a new battery as compensation. It also transpired that even if I had replaced the faulty battery in a faraway place like Cape Town, I would have had to carry it with me, even if it took a month or more to reach Battery Doctor in Rustenburg, to provide it to them for testing. I told the sa*****y that I cannot go and collect the old battery at R200 or would have done any of his other unreasonable requests, only to hear from them that the guaranteed battery, that failed in less than 10 months, will not be compensated to me. I left there, disgusted at their attitude, relentlessness and plain bad service, with the resolve to tell this to all who need to be warned and ensure no one else, make the same mistake. Go to reputable service centres, even if you have to wait a day. Especially avoid this one. Should the battery have been replaced under guarantee, the cost to me could have been an hour plus maybe R50; now it cost me R1200 for a new battery; R350 labour; R500 towing service; and a full day's work lost. Bad Doctor.
