Waiting Period for Newborn Babies
We are the the BankMed Comprehensive plan and we found out yesterday at our 6-week old daughter cannot get medications because she is currently on a 3 month waiting period. Called the customer care line and was told it’s because we registered her after 30 days as a dependent. This cannot be assumed to be common sense to everybody that you have 30 days otherwise your baby wait 3 whole months of the most critical days of her life.
Unless BankMed sent us communication that she needs to be registered within 30 days and can prove this communication. I’m not sure how newborn babies can be expected to wait 3 months. We’ve been informed that she can only be covered from the 1st of March 2026.
She is currently not well and is not covered, so basically she can die? This is ridiculous. This is nonsense.

In response to your query, please note that an email was sent by Bankmed on 15 September 2025, advising that newborn applications must be submitted within 30 days of birth.
We have advised that your newborn application can be processed without the birth certificate initially, and that the birth certificate may be submitted at a later stage once it has been received from Home Affairs.
Please also note that submitting a newborn application after 30 days will result in the application being subject to waiting periods and penalties.
