Non disclosure
I have been a member of Bankmed for +-8 years and never had to pay out of my pocket for medical bills. Since Discovery took over the administration of Bankmed on 01/01/2016, I find myself drowning from unpaid medical bills. When I called the Bankmed/Discovery call centre I was told I exceeded my annual out of network GP visits, an basic dentistry. On 12/02/2016 I called the call centre to find out if my GP was in the network and he was. I asked the consultant to register this GP for both myself and daughter as our primary GP network provider. The consultant confirmed that he effected the change. The consultant also mentioned something about out of network GP benefit. But he did not inform me how this out of network GP benefit worked eg the consequences of financial impact i would suffer if I exceeded the benefit. This information would have been valuable and influenced my decision on how use my benefits. I had no idea that a secondary GP is considered as out of network provider. On Bankmed's website both doctors I have seen are in your network provider list and full cover benefits. The scheme failed me here by not providing crucial information.

Hi Faith
Thank you for raising your concerns with us.
We've confirmed that this matter has been discussed with you and we're sorry we are unable to provide you with a different outcome. On your plan type you have to nominate a GP as your primary doctor and any visits to another GP, regarless of whether they are on the network, will be considered as an out of network visit as the GP is not your chosen GP.
You are more than welcome to email us at *** or log into our website at www.bankmed.co.za should you require any further assistance in this matter.
