Bankmed using my savings instead of my benefits.

I had an eye test in September 2020 and received new glasses. The total was around R14k and it was paid out as part of the normal benefits.

I went again in January 2023. Got the same prescription lenses (stronger) and a new frame. The total this time was R12,7k. The invoice was submitted to Bankmed and the optometrist received the go-ahead for the glasses. I received my glasses a week later.

Then 2 days later we received the claim on the Bankmed app. Bankmed had taken R10k off our savings. If I had known this was gonna be the case I would never had gone through with the transaction. We have twins in Grade 2 and the savings is much needed. Now we have to get through the whole year, with almost 50% of our savings wiped out.

That`s not all. I just received a call from my optometrist. I still owe R1750, which Bankmed didn`t pay.

I have never in my 25 odd years with Bankmed had any issues with the payment of glasses or prescription lenses, until now.

Honestly, since Discovery has taken over the administration, it has been shambolic to say the least.

I have submitted a complaint to the Council of Medical Aid Schemes too.
