I am writing this complaint to report a potential **** and unfair business practice that I have experienced at the Thohoyandou branch, not sure if this is your company’s culture and policy.
On Thursday, I rented a vehicle and received an invoice outlining the agreed-upon terms and costs. However, upon returning the vehicle, the inspector had me sign a document under the pretense that it was a standard handover procedure.
Unfortunately, when I received my invoice upon returning home, I discovered that I had been charged an additional R1,400 above the initially agreed-upon amount. What's more alarming is that the inspector did not disclose any changes to my contract, despite assuring me that I would only be liable for refueling costs since the vehicle was returned in good condition.
Upon closer inspection of the invoices, I noticed that I had been charged double Value-Added Tax (VAT) on the refundable amount, which appears to be in contravention of the South African Income Tax Act. As far as I am aware, the standard VAT rate is 15%, and there is no provision for double charging VAT on refundable amounts.
Furthermore, I was charged twice for the contract fee, despite only entering into a single contract. It is my understanding that the return of the vehicle does not solely form part of the a new contract and should be treated as such, and therefore, should not incur additional fees.
I was charged twice for the additional insurance covers I had opted for, which is unacceptable. These discrepancies suggest that the company may be engaging in unfair and deceptive business practices, potentially manipulating figures and misrepresenting tax obligations in the hopes that customers will not notice.
