Unauthorized changes and holding deposits
I received a rental car from AVIS arrange by Discovery insure while my car was in for repairs.
I had to make a payment of a holding deposit that I had no problem doing for R1500.
I collect the car in Stellenbosch on 1 April 2021 and then had to travel to Johannesburg for family emergency 11 April. As the rental car was to small and did not have my car to travel with. Discovery arrange for me to return the car in Cape Town and collect replacement car on OR Tambo. I had to present my card again for another holding deposit of R1500.
I saw the change for the extra cost relating to the CPT rental car clear my account and checked the invoice. All was correct.
I returned the rental car on OR Tambo with a full take of fuel. There was no staff to take this keys and check the cars when I arrived at the airport and was instructed to just leave the keys in the car.
When I get back to CPT a change of R3458.41 cleared my account. This included a full take on fuel based on the cars capacity when completely empty. plus 3 days rental and the windscreen and tyre damage waiver that I requested. Lucky we had the slip and photo of the fuel cage and time when we dropped the car. We made contact with the OR Tambo office and they passed credit for the fuel.
Discovery confirm that they would authorize the additional 3 days and that would bring my expected change to clear my account to +/-R655.
We have now been in contact with our broker, Discovery and AVIS regarding charged and holding deposit since the 28 April regarding the incorrect changes and holding deposit.
At one stage I had holding deposit of R4500 against my account for what I only authorized R3000, A change of R1261.54 and R3458.41,
Now that the holding deposit was all cleared and we received a credit for the fuel only for R636.2.1. I got a email yesterday from Dineo Mmusi stating the following:
Kindly be advised that we transferred the extra days to the voucher and credited the customer's account with an amount of R2166.94. The funds normally reflect back into the account within 7-10 business days
SO this morning I check my account and noticed that NO CREDIT but other authorized change of R1451.22.
My bank account is not authorized for fund AVIS!!!
I am NOT HAPPY to wait 7-10 days for credit to my account all while AVIS is processing unexplained unauthorized charges to my account.
If I understand the email correctly and looking at the invoice received the amount that I would be due to pay AVIS is as follows:
- The customer was initially billed R1451.22 (Invoices – E***) for refuelling of the vehicle, the windscreen & tyre damage waiver and windscreen damage admin fee.
- We credited the refuelling fee on the 6th of May for an amount of R636.20 (Credit – E***). Please find attached invoice, credit note and revised invoice.
(Invoices – E***) - R 1451.22
(Credit – E***) - R 636.20 less
Balance due by me - R 815.02
So can someone please explain how when I do a simple calculation of the debit and credit against my bank account (statement attached) is as follows:
Debit 29/04/2021 - R3458.41
Credit 04/05/2021 - R 636.21
Debit 05/05/2021 - R1451.22
Credit 08/05/2021 - R2166.94
Credit 08/05/2021 - R 636.20
Total Paid (from my account) R1470.28
@AVIS executives - So can I please ask the management for AVIS to please assist your staff to provide me with the correct amount WITH FULL DETAILS that I have was due to be charged by AVIS. If the information received from Dineo Mmusi is correct and based on the simple math on my email, can you please arrange for the balance of the credit of R 655.26 to be paid to me with immediate affect and not to send me ****py automated email advising that I would need to wait 7-10 days as any further delay is unacceptable.
@DISCOVERY – My car is due to go in for further repairs and I believe that I would require another rental car. I am NOT happy to present my bank card to AVIS for any holding deposit based on the above. I hope that you will take this problem under consideration in the negotiation with your agreement with AVIS and maybe explore your options on behalf of your loyal customers and consider other rental companies. If this is how they handle my simple account and billing. What does your BIG account with all these rental look like! I trust that the management of AVIS will look into this a matter of urgency.
Please note that copies of these email will also be available to read on Hello Peter, Google, Facebook etc. I will ensure that I spell all peoples involved names correctly to allow you to follow these post personally.
Kind regards, Mr. Coetzer ***
