The worst service at AVIS cars rental

The worst service I got from Avis was last year number I hired a car for a month and taken out comprehensive insurance, the car hit a dog but because I thought I took out the insurance everything will be covered, to my amazement Avis returned the full amount of the hiring deposit included into my account without a reference. I was awaiting money from my investments to buy school stationary so I assumed that was the money, I then got a call that I owe Avis R15k, because there systems are fault, I was told if the money is on hold and is not collected by AVIS in 30 days it will go back to my account. I am not privy of there internal processes but now I have to suffer and pay for a service again that I thought I already paid. Highly disappointed and I will never make use of them again they have gone as far as threatening legal action for something I didn’t do.

Hi Tabisa,

Thank you for contacting us,

Please be advised that when you collect the rental vehicle, the holding deposit we hold in your account is not an amount we debit from your account for the rental, this is a hold and the amount remains in your account until your bank releases it back to your available funds, when its released back to you, it will not come back as a credit or reflect in your account as a transaction by Avis as this was not a credit or transaction done into your account by Avis.

We do not debit the rental amount from the holding deposit, we debit from your available balance, and the hold is released to you, your bank released the hold, as Avis could not get payment for the rental we then sent the rental to our Debtors department.

This is unfortunate as it was not explained to me and I have hired vehicles from AVIS and other companies for many, many years and I have NEVER encountered such. It doesn’t even make sense. It’s like buying a microwave then a month later the return the money to me and expect me to repay for the microwave I took delivery for a month ago. I was also told after enquiring it’s due to an old system that AVIS uses that if after 30 days, if AVIS does not collect the money is returned to the customers account. If this information was explained upfront I would not be in this situation, AVIS is already taking legal action for a service I paid for and now I’m at fault cause there systems are outdated. This is not on

Please be advised that the customer cannot pay for the rental upon collection, the charge for your rental only happens after you have returned the rental vehicle. The holding deposit is a security deposit for the rental and as advised it is not a payment taken by Avis, the amount remains in your account, and depending on your bank this gets released back to you within 7-30 days.

This is not an old system but the current system we have at Avis, we request a security deposit as a hold in your account, and after you return the vehicle, Avis proceeds to debit the rental amount from your account not the holding deposit, the amount that was held as a security deposit gets released back to your account by your bank.

We do apologize that this was not explained to you upon the collection of the rental.

I don’t think you understand the full amount was deposited back into my account the hiring fee and the deposit. I know deposit is usually returned after a week but why was the hiring fee also returned, which caused a huge inconvenience

We do not debit the hiring amount from the amount that was held when you collected the vehicle, the hiring amount gets debited separately in your account, and the amount that was held is released in full back to your available balance.

1st time this is happening I have
Hired vehicles at AVIS for many years, even when I told other people about the weird incident they were shocked and repeated my sentiments that it has never happened to them. It’s fine, I just wanted to express my disappointment and frustration regarding an organisation I once held highly and will never again.
