Shady business dealings bordering on *****

Shady business dealings bordering on *****!! My mom had a rental with Avis, through her insurance, Momentum from 22 February 2022 to 24 March. From the onset the conduct of Avis personnel was questionable, they were supposed to deliver the car to my mom's house and they phoned to say that she must come and fetch the car at the Avis OR Tambo airport branch. When she got to the airport branch, she was told that she must go to the Isando branch. When processing her rental, she was not made to sign any documentation, and as a first time renter, she didn't know that she was supposed to sign a rental agreement and get a copy of it, the Avis cashier only made her pay a rental deposit of R1500.

The car was given to her without being inspected with her and she was not even given the inspection form that noted any damage to the vehicle. When the Avis representative came to collect the car, he pointed out a scratch that resembles a 'dot' on the front bumper and wanted my mom to sign a document to confirm that the vehicle was damaged by her. She told him that she didn't do any inspection of the vehicle before it was given to her and she hasn't even seen the dot that he is pointing out before. Over and above the R1500 for deposit (which has still not been refunded by Avis since 24 March, Avis has subsequently debited the amounts of R654; R2331; R1661.78 (ref: damage only, subject to change) and R600 for insurance for 15 days (without any paperwork).

After much pestering and querying of the aforementioned amounts, Avis Isando has since sent my mom a copy of the rental agreement with only my mom's surname in capital letters the box where it says 'renter's name and street address' (note: my mom doesn't write in capital letters) the rental agreement is not completed at all and unsigned, they have also sent a copy of the of the vehicle inspection form with the time-in of 9:00, my mom only got to Isando branch at 9:40, the vehicle inspection form says the car was inspected by Zweli and the driver to airport was Zweli, my mom got the car at Isando branch, also my mom was walked to the car and given the car and keys by the same lady that was processing her deposit payment and not Zweli. They have cut and pasted my mom's signature from the paypoint machine receipt onto the vehicle inspection form.

To date this matter has not been resolved, my mom's rental deposit has not been refunded, and all other unauthorized amounts that Avis debited from her bank account. Instead Avis Isando is adamant that they are not at fault.!!!!! I will share this information on all social media platforms.....

Hi Zanele,

Thank you for writing to us.

The vehicle was collected at the Isando branch and a quality control envelope was signed by the renter acknowledging that the car had no damages when it was collected. When the driver fetched the car it was inspected and the damage was found. The customer was informed of this.  We will request our team to send the damage documents.

We sent an instruction to the bank to release the deposit that was held in the customer's account. The customer needs to monitor their available balance to see the release.

This response is not true, please provide the CCTV camera feeds to show where and when my mom signed the damage form to acknowledge the damage on the car that you allege that she acknowledged that there was no damage on the car when she collected the car from your branch. Also are you going to ignore the issue of unathorised debits on my mom’s bank account? How do you decide to debit a certain amount from a customer’s account before producing the evidence/proof of damage that entitles you to the amount debited in the form of quotes from your body works service provider????

Hi Zanele,

Thanks for your feedback.

Our team sent the damage documents to the customer. The signed damage report was signed by the customer which means the customer acknowledged the damage found. We do not assist with CCTV footage, unfortunately.

Hi

Point of correction, the customer was sent the inspection form which shows the inspection time of 9:00 and that the car was sent to airport by Zweli. The customer only got the car at around 10:40 and she had no dealings with Zweli, the person that gave her the car and the keys is a FEMALE. This form was not given to the customer at the time of picking up the car and the customer did not sign any inspection form that said there was no damage to the car. Further, she did not sign the damage form when the car was collected from her premises, and therefore she has not accepted the alleged damage. What do you mean when you say that you do not assist with CCTV footage when there is a dispute of this nature? Your employees are enabled to do as they please and allege that customers inspected cars and signed documentation that did not sign and you say you cannot assist with CCTV footage?

Hi Zanele,

We will redirect the dispute to the branch manager and revert to you with feedback. CCTV footage is the intellectual property of Avis and is at the branch's discretion to provide it.
