Prepare yourself for being taken for a ride.
Avis has been my preferred choice for car rental for many years and I have always had good service from them. Unfortunately, that relationship has now soured. They have always put a hold on your card for the deposit which is understandable. However in the last year or so, the hold on the card is not released unless you phone their call centre. Every time this is 3 to 4 weeks later. The call centre then tells you that it will take 24 to 72 hours for it to be released. Don't trust that either. It is now almost a week. Unacceptable. I will rather try another car rental in future. I do not have time to play this game.

29 Sept 2025, 09:36Dear Louis,
Thank you for your feedback,
Please note that the release of any authorization hold is processed automatically by your bank once the rental vehicle has been returned. We send an automated communication to your bank to release any pending amounts and to debit any outstanding charges.
We recommend that customers contact us within 48 hours of returning the vehicle if they wish for us to manually send a release request to their bank. Please be aware that this process typically takes 48 to 72 hours, depending on your bank’s procedures.
A communication has already been forwarded to your bank to release any pending amounts. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Thank you.
Avis Team.
