Overcharge for Damages

I have tried calling customer service but always get the message of high call volumes try later… I am also not getting any joy from the local office

Our rental vehicle was broken into in a shopping center parking lot. The drivers lock was damaged. All waivers were taken. Understandably we will be liable to some sort of payment. We received an email stating additional R2415.74 is due for damages. Thereafter a sms stating R4132.93 is now due. We asked for the repair invoice which is a total of R3405.00. Deposit of R2000 is already been taken. So how can the amount due be over R4000? When the repairs are less than that, is the R2000.00 deposit not forming part of this?

I need an answer on how this works, is is right that AVIS profits from damages? Is there not insurance for this sort of thing?

Dear  Erika,

Thank you for reaching out, and we apologize for the challenges you've encountered while trying to connect with us.

We understand your concerns regarding the additional charges following the unfortunate incident with your rental vehicle. The charges and waivers around damage fees can indeed be complex, and we’re here to clarify and ensure transparency in the process.

It’s certainly not our policy to profit from damages; rather, these charges are processed to cover the costs incurred, as per our waiver terms. We can confirm that damage waivers help minimize costs but may not cover all aspects depending on the waiver type.

Please allow us some time to review your case in detail.

Thank you for your patience, and please don’t hesitate to reach out with further questions in the meantime.

Kind regards,
The Avis Team

Just another note: We received another message today, amount of R4514.74 is now due. How did it go up from R4132.93 to R4514.74 in one day.

Dear Erika,

Thank you for getting in touch with us.

Please note that your invoice indicates that the total amount due is R4415.74 excl. VAT, with the damage amount being R3405.00 excl. VAT, plus a damage admin fee of R434.78 excl. VAT.

Hope this provides sufficient clarity.
