Online quotes meaningless - you get charged whatever they want. BEWARE

Booked online for a car rental in Italy for Euro382.17 or R6099. All exactly according to plan however Avis decided to charge me Euro1100.60 or R17565.03. Is this not very very wrong?

I have written many emails, tried to elevate it but nothing. Tried to call and I was kept on hold for 15 minutes. Appalling.
