Held liable for damage despite photographic proof of prior damage
I rented a car from Avis from 2-9 July 2026. When I collected the car there was no one to inspect the vehicle nor was the damage sheet completed. There was several areas of the car that had damage on it, so I took many pictures. On my return, the vehicle inspector noted just on of the damaged areas, the right rear fender. I immediately showed the picture of the damage I took which clearly shows that I took the picture before I drove off. About a week alter I received the invoice which now kept me liable for the damage and repair. I immediately contact Avis' customer car and again provided the explanation and photographic proof. After many follow-ups, Avis in essence tells me that the damage was not recorded and it is my responsibility to conduct the damage inspection (which I did) and that the picture I supp**** is not the same as the damage although it is exactly the same issue (Avis cannot supply a photo to the contrary). In addition the damage cost (I have the invoice) amounted to R2457. Yet, Avis keeps me liable for more than the actual cost to repair the damage for which I am not liable. After more than a month on not moving on this and not receiving feedback, I had no choice but to submit a complaint to the Motor Industry Ombudsman so that this matter may hopefully be resolved. What is even more concerning is that I have rented with Avis exclusively for years and have an impeccable record. Unfortunately, Avis will not see my business again
