Excessive charge for damage and poor processes.

I hired a vehicle from Avis Cape Town Airport from the 16th of October 2021 till the 13th of November 2021.

I was given a white Suzuki Dzire which was badly scratched (Apparently from when removing stickers).

On returning the car on the 13th of November 2021, no issues were identified and everything was signed. While walking to the airport terminal, the AVIS assistant ran to me and told me to come back as they found a scratch on the car. (I do not dispute the scratch but mention this to emphasise how small and pretty undetectable it was)

The scratch was a small one on the bottom left of the rear bumper. I mentioned to them that I was unaware of the damage and they checked the system to identify that it was not there when taking the car. I was informed that the manager will be in contact with me to discuss the cost of the damage, if any, as it was small scratch on an already badly scratched vehicle. I did not sign any damage forms.

On Monday the 15th of November 2021, I received notifications of money coming off my credit card from my bank. This was followed, a few hours later, by an SMS from Avis stating that I will be billed R1661.78 ex VAT for the damage of the car.

I do not believe the damage is close to this amount as it is barely visible and wanted to dispute it. Tarquin, the manager from Avis Cape Town Airport, informed me that there is a standard price charged for a scratch on a rear bumper.

The manager, Tarquin, mentioned that he would obtain the quote from the panel beater to confirm the damage costs. The amount of the damage was provided on the 15th of November and the quote by the panel beater was done on the 18th of November - this shows I was charged the amount before the quote was received.

I send this through to complaints and tried escalating the dispute at Avis with no luck in resolving it.

Good Day

I do not dispute that there was damage on the vehicle.
My dispute is on the amount charged for almost unnoticeable damage.

Furthermore, the car was an already badly scratched vehicle, however I was informed that there is a standard price charge for any damage to a rear bumper no matter the size.

Lastly, the amount of the damage was provided on the 15th of November and the quote by the panel beater was done on the 18th of November - this shows I was charged the amount before the quote was received.

Hi Rayhaan,

The damage amount was charged within the liability amount on your signed agreement. On the 15th of November, we received an estimated quote from the panel beaters. Then on the 18th of November, the vehicle was taken in for repairs, hence the final tax invoice is dated the 18th of November.

Best regards,

The process followed is not fair and the amount charged was excessive for the size of the damage. I have validated this with panel beaters.
That being said, it appears that your company has no desire to resolve this and therefore I will not change my review.
Furthermore, this will have an impact on my view of Avis and using Avis in the future. I will also be sure to communicate this to my friends, family and network and urge them to use other car hiring companies instead to avoid issues similar to this.
