Ethically and Morally Challenged

On the 28th of Jan, I was involved in a car accident. I was given a rental vehicle through my insurance company supp**** by Avis on the 30th of Jan. On receipt of the vehicle, I was asked to pay over a deposit of R1200.00. I had the vehicle until the 25th of Feb, when I returned it with a full tank of petrol. I asked when my deposit would be refunded. the gentlemen collecting the vehicle told me that they weren't sure, but thought it would be within 24 hours.

On the evening of 26th of Feb, Avis deducted an amount of R370.00 from my bank account without my knowledge or permission. I phoned the national call centre on the 27th, and asked what the deduction was for. I was told it was for Toll fees, I expressed my surprise at the amount as it seemed to be excessive. I was sent a statement, which had the gantries listed that I had travelled through. I worked out what I would have paid from an old account, and the amount came to R235.82. When I queried the extra deduction, I was told that Avis charge a standard rate per gantry.

At this point, my deposit has still not been refunded, and I am shocked that Avis are using the Toll fees as a money making scheme to their benefit.
