Damaged on motor vehicle

On the 12 Sep 15 i returned a rented car to Avis at around 2pm. Since the branch was already closed the guard instructed me to drop the keys through a drop box. Before i returned the car i inspected it as i had experience from my workplace where they always say the car was damaged after it has been returned. Two weeks later i received an SMS from their customer care saying i owe R1,700 for the damage on the wheel of the car. I never received a phone call from Avis to come and inspect the, A damage to the wheel worth R1,700 means i had a accident yet the car was intact and no damage was reported to the car body. How can this be? I was never given a chance to defend myself and today i received an sms that i have neen handed over.
I phoned the branch & spoke to Loraine who said she was going to ask her Manager Joane to phone me and she never phoned me. Two weeks later I phoned again and i spoke to Joane who said she was going to investigate and come back to me which she never did only to recieve an sms today saying i have been handed over.
I smell something fish here i am of the opinion that someone changed my tyre and put a damaged whell the manager was supposed to investigate
