Credit Card abuse and lack of communication

I rented a car for one day from Avis at OR Tambo on September 21, 2024, and had a terrible experience. I was informed that I could return the car anytime before 2 PM the next day, as I had picked it up at 2 PM. However, I returned the car just after 2 PM, within the grace period. When I inquired about the authorization hold on my account, I was told that I had rented the car for two days. Shockingly, I wasn’t even sent a statement until I called, at which point the representative emailed it to me while we were on the phone.

It's disheartening how Avis seems to abuse customers’ credit cards, acting without regard for our funds. I asked the representative to investigate the situation, as it was incorrect. I even offered to provide my Uber statement as proof of the time I left OR Tambo after dropping off the car, but she showed little interest in that evidence.

Avis wrongfully deducted R500 from my account—money I had set aside to purchase my ticket back home to Port Elizabeth. I came to Johannesburg to celebrate my nephew's birthday; he is battling leukemia, and I rented the car to transport him from the hospital to the venue. I had no intention or financial capacity to keep the car for an extra day, especially given my circumstances.

I am extremely disappointed by this experience, particularly the disregard shown towards my situation. At a time when my family is dealing with a severely ill loved one, I received no empathy or understanding from Avis. Despite my request for an investigation, I have not received any communication from you.

If you review your security footage, you will see I spent nearly two hours at your office that day, ensuring I got the car to avoid letting down my nephew. Furthermore, I was never informed that being a few minutes late would result in an extra day's charge. To add insult to injury, my bank statement shows the money was deducted at 13:55, while your contract states I took the car at 13:40.

I urge you to address this issue and refund the money that was wrongfully taken. Avis claims to be for the people, but in this case, you have shown otherwise. Rental agreement number: E***.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are truly sorry to hear about your disappointing experience with Avis, and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and stress this has caused, especially during such a challenging time.

We understand the seriousness of the situation and will immediately escalate this matter for investigation and ensure we review your rental agreement, the return time, and the transaction on your account. We will also review the security footage as you mentioned, and  will make sure this is handled with the urgency it deserves.

Your experience is not reflective of the service we strive to provide, and we regret that we let you down in this instance.

Thank you for your patience, and again, we apologize for the inconvenience.
