I recently rented a vehicle from Avis Lanseria. Trying to avoid the extra charges for fuel, I returned the vehicle with a full tank of fuel. As Avis automatically debits the rental fees from your credit card, I did not pay much attention to the amount, until I noticed the debit seemed higher than it should be. I checked the invoice and noticed that they had charged me an additional R806.00 for fuel? I have since reported this as a "Dispute" with their customer care and await feedback.
My issue however is not only my case in particular. This is no accident. This to me is blatant *****, by purposefully adding the extra charge on to your account, and having these charges automatically debited from your credit card or holding deposit, the onus is left on you as the client to dispute the additional charge in order to get a refund. How many people do not read their invoice correctly and are "accidentally" charged these additional fees without a dispute? The cars go through a strict returns process when you bring them back, and the fuel reading is noted on the returns document, so how does a full fuel reading translate to a charge of R806.00 for fuel?
I expect Avis to provide me with a fuel slip for the related fuel charge to prove that they in fact are trying to charge me for a legitimate fuel claim. I in turn have my fuel slip, time and date stamped for 30min before I returned the vehicle, from a Fuel Station not more than 10km away.
This is disgusting and completely dishonest business practice.
Oh yes, and I expect Avis will also be refunding the R1.00 that was charged on my credit card as a holding transaction as this is not shown on my invoice?
