BEWARE - staff try to pin PRE-EXISTING damages onto the customer AND FALSE odometer reading on contract !!!
I have made use of Avis's services on a number of occasions, and in the past never had a problem, however, my recent experience with the ROODEPOORT branch, as far as I can help it, was also the LAST !
On 2017/11/17 I returned a white Hyundai 1.2 FR07KTGP which was on rental from 2017/11/03.
While my returned vehicle was being inspected, I noticed a male employee washing another vehicle parked in the undercover area on the opposite side AND facing the REAR DRIVER side of my vehicle.
The lady, who inspected my vehicle THOROUGHLY, gave it the thumbs up. I was then handed the document for release and was on my way to the customer service counter, when all of a sudden, I was called back by the male employee who was washing the other vehicle. IMMEDIATELY he started accusing me of "bumping" the returned vehicle. Knowing VERY well that this is NOT TRUE and because at NO stage WHATSOEVER was this male employee ever involved with the inspection process, I requested him to point this BUMP out to me.
He then came from the OPPOSITE site and DIRECTLY pointed out to the BOTTOM FRONT PASSENGER bumper side which is NOT visible to ANY human eye !
The ONLY way this "damage" can be seen is :
1) If the vehicle is pulled over a pit as those used by mechanics in a workshop. In other words, the vehicle must be RAISED high enough in the air for a person to get in UNDERNEATH the vehicle in order to inspect it.
OR
2) The person KNOWS it is there BECAUSE he/she caused it in the first place.
My question is - how can a HUMAN with NON-XRAY eyes SEE damage on the OPPOSITE side of a vehicle and almost at STREET LEVEL ? UNLESS that person KNOWS that it ALREADY exists !
Only after I, in NO uncertain terms, made it VERY clear to the lady at the customer counter that I will NOT be held liable for any PRE-EXISTING damage which ALSO is NOT visible by any HUMAN eye, WITHOUT having to put this vehicle over a pit, was the rental closed off.
I attach an image (for illustration purposes only) of the appropriate circumstances. Thank you for teaching me yet another life lesson AVIS --- Next time I WILL demand the vehicle to be airlifted or put over a pit for a MORE THOROUGH inspection BEFORE collection !
Furthermore : on the rental agreement, the KILOMETRES OUT is stated as 549. This is a FALSE statement ! When I collected the vehicle, the ODOMETER was already on approximately 16,200 km's. I had the vehicle for 2 weeks and traveled not more than a total of 450 km's. The vehicle was returned with a odometer reading of approximately 16,650 km's. I DREAD to think what CHAOS this FALSE reading would have caused should I have rented this vehicle on a LIMITED MILEAGE basis !
Last point : The specific vehicle is equipped with a Distance to Empty meter which indicates the estimated remaining km's that can be traveled on the current fuel before it is empty. When I collected the vehicle this meter indicated a total of 572 km's. I filled up the tank before returning the vehicle. Upon the returned inspection at Avis's premises, this SAME meter gave a reading of 595 km's. In other words, there is a difference of 23 km's AND at least 3.5 liters of fuel which I did not have the benefit for from the start.
I did not receive this vehicle with a FULL tank of fuel although the rental contract states that these rental vehicles MUST be returned with a FULL tank of fuel.
AVIS has benefited from MY honesty --- how much EXACTLY do they benefit from OTHER honest customers like me ???
