Bait & Switch - had to pay more than double
I booked a VW Polo through Expedia (one day rental, ~R1200).

When I arrived, they did not have a Polo available, as their only Polo was accident damaged. They offered me a Toyota Etios or Polo Vivo. I originally had the choice to book a Polo Vivo online, and specifically chose not to book this as it is an older, smaller model car and I felt that the safety of my family is paramount and I did not wish to drive a cheaper car while on South African roads during the Xmas break.

I asked if I could upgrade to a larger car, and the only option I was given was a BMW 3 series, for more than R2600.

They also offered me an i20 (also smaller than a Polo), but I would have to take the extra time to get to their Menlyn Park branch.

I was left no option but to pay more than double in order to get on the road.

I feel that Avis failed in not having the car available that I booked online, trying to give me an inferior, cheaper car instead and then forcing me to pay a significant amount of extra money in order to get a safer, larger car.
