Avis has found a new way to make mony from their customers.

I have recently become aware of a repeated manner in which Avis rental department has been handling the returning of vehicles finding a new way of making money from there customers

In this past week alone, I have booked two vehicles, one for myself and one for my wife. On both occasions when we arrived at OR Tambo Avis branch we were given the paperwork and sent on our way. Before leaving their parking garage I checked the vehicle myself and had to go looking for one of their service agents to assist in marking the damages which were on the vehicle onto the paperwork. He was very reluctant to assist me and eventually sent someone else to help me. When I arrived back at OR Tambo to return the car on Tuesday 11 October 2016, there were 3 service agents waiting for me to stop and all three of them then proceeded to check the car for damages. One gentleman kneeled in front of the vehicle and ran his hand under the front bumper and claimed that there were damages which I had caused. I immediately disputed this as I had not been in any situation where such damage could have occurred. At the same time, I also kneeled in front of the vehicle to try to feel what he was referring to. The underside of the bumper was full of scratches, which he was now trying to blame on me.

When my wife returned her vehicle the next day, 12 October 2016, the same thing happened to her. The gentlemen inspecting the vehicle went so far as to open the door and recorded damage to the outer edge of the door which they reported as having been done by my wife. The damage is something which would be consistent with the door having been opened and banged against a wall or something similar. In the time which my wife had the vehicle, she left OR Tambo, travelled to her mother’s house where she stopped under a tree and then returned to the airport. There was nowhere that she parked in a garage or even a parking area where such damage to the door could have occurred.

I have subsequently been billed R3162.00 for the repairs.

I have only experienced this problem when returning vehicles to OR Tambo and have not once had the same thing when returning a vehicle to Lanseria airport. It seems to me that this is the newest scheme which is being used to catch unsuspecting customers and thus a new way of them passing charges onto the customer and in such a way generate additional income for themselves.
