A Year-Long Disputed Account — Avis Will Collect, But Will Not Properly Investigate

I have spent approximately a year trying to get Avis to properly investigate and reconcile a disputed FlexClub/Avis account. I am posting publicly only after exhausting repeated internal attempts to obtain meaningful engagement. The dispute is not simply that I “do not want to pay”. I dispute the underlying billing and account history itself. I have extensive documentary evidence relating to payments, billing, vehicle exchanges, communications and the subsequent recovery of the vehicle.

The matter became particularly serious when an Avis representative arrived at my residence to recover the vehicle while claiming I had not paid for two months. I disputed that assertion and have retained the contemporaneous payment and account evidence. The recovery was also accompanied by an SMS warning that a ******** case would be opened, the tracker activated and a recovery team dispatched, and referring to avoiding “embarrassment”. Rather than resolving the underlying account dispute, the matter has continued through different Avis representatives and legal channels.

It was referred to MIOSA under reference ****97/RW. MIOSA subsequently closed the matter on jurisdictional grounds without determining the merits of my complaint.

I also raised the matter publicly with Avis through Facebook. On 3 May 2026 Avis asked for my agreement number. After I supp**** it, Avis confirmed that the query had been escalated for investigation. On 6 May I was specifically told that it had been handed to Avis Legal for further handling. Months later, I am still waiting for that substantive investigation and reconciliation.

In July 2026, after further collection activity, I again confirmed in writing that the alleged balance remained formally disputed and requested that collection activity be suspended while the matter was escalated. On 13 August 2026 I received a final demand for R19,961.29. On the same day, I escalated the matter directly to Zeda Limited at corporate level and formally requested an independent executive review by someone who had not previously been involved. I supp**** supporting evidence and offered my larger indexed evidence bundle for review. I have received no substantive response to that escalation. Instead, collection communications demanding the same R19,961.29 have continued.

After approximately a year, I no longer believe another request to “please investigate” is a meaningful solution. Avis has had repeated opportunities through customer channels, its representatives, Legal, social-media escalation and now corporate escalation to examine the evidence and explain the account.

What I want is straightforward: an independent reconciliation of the complete account and payment history; a written explanation of the basis for the R19,961.29 claimed; review of the circumstances and information re**** upon when the vehicle was recovered; correction of any unsupported charges or records; and suspension of collection activity until the underlying dispute has actually been investigated.

I retain the documentary evidence supporting the chronology above and am willing to provide it to an appropriately appointed independent reviewer.

Thank you for responding.

Unfortunately, this response illustrates the concern raised in my review. This is not a new customer-service query requiring a booking reference. The matter has already been escalated repeatedly within Avis, including to Legal, and the relevant account/reference information has been supp**** on numerous occasions.

My review concerns Avis's failure to substantively engage with the documented dispute despite those escalations. I also submitted a formal request for independent executive review to Zeda on 13 August 2026, together with supporting evidence. That request has not received a substantive response, while collection activity has continued.

I therefore do not intend to restart the complaint through another general customer-service channel. If Avis wishes to resolve the matter, please have an appropriately authorised person review the existing case history and respond to the issues and relief set out above.

Update — 25 August 2026
Avis's response above does not address any of the issues raised in my review. It directs me back to a general contact channel despite the matter already having been escalated repeatedly, including to Legal and to Zeda at executive level.

More concerningly, today — one day after this review was published — I received another payment demand stating that my account is “currently in arrears with R19 961.29” and requiring “immediate payment” to avoid “legal consequences”.

This collection activity is continuing despite Avis/Zeda having been expressly notified that the amount is formally disputed and despite my written request for an independent review of the underlying account, billing history, payment allocation, vehicle recovery and subsequent collections activity.
Avis was also provided with an opportunity through this public review to address those substantive issues. The response above does not do so.

I am therefore documenting publicly that, as at 25 August 2026, Avis continues to demand payment and refer to legal consequences while my request for an independent review remains substantively unanswered.

I will now refer the matter through the appropriate external channels. I remain willing to engage with an appropriately authorised representative who is prepared to address the documented dispute on its merits.
