Why do credit cards get skimmed before use.

I recently bought items at my local autuZone branch,where my credit card was swiped thru a skimming device before it was inserted into pay point.I asked the cashier why she did that,her answer was that autozone wants to now my name before i pay.How can that be relevant if she did not ask for my ID. PLEASE EXPLAIN.
