Utterly disgusted and beyond disappointed – Autoworks Milnerton Branch

Utterly disgusted and beyond disappointed – Autoworks Milnerton Branch On the 20 th of March 2018, I took my car for a service to Autoworks Milnerton and paid R1895.00 as per the quote I received. I was happy that I was told that nothing else is wrong with the car and parts are still intact, however, that I just need to replace the coils soon. I was kept up to date with the progress of my car and received great customer service. On the 20 th of July 2018, I went back to Autoworks Milnerton due to the previous great experience and I paid R5092.20 for the coils to be replaced as I was advised before and per the quote received and when this was done, I specifically asked if everything on the car is in order and whether all the parts are still in a very good condition. I was then assured, nothing was wrong, and no parts need to be replaced as everything is still in a very good condition. Yesterday 22 nd August 2018, I drove my wife to work and suddenly, the car switches off in the middle of traffic and did not want to drive. At this moment, I’m thinking the car just needs to perhaps warm up and no alarm goes off. However, after almost trying to get the car drive after 30 minutes, alarm bells go off and, in my head, concerns kick in as the car still did not want to drive. Two strangers then had to help with jump starting my car, so I could safely drive my wife to work. I immediately took the car into Autoworks Milnerton and needed to get explanations from the staff and manager as to how my car does not work when a service was done, coils have been replaced and I’ve been assured that nothing else is wrong with my car as all the parts are still in a very good condition. Remember, I paid for all of this and I would not be livid if I was told or advised anything else needs to be replaced as I would’ve budgeted for this. I left my car in the hands of Autoworks Milnerton staff, so they can investigate what the cause and problem is with the car, I received no phone call or any update, however, just the below email with a new quote. Good day. Find attached with work needed on the vehicle and advise if we should proceed with the work. I have also attached the fault reports that were picked up today on the computer when we scanned it. The part is exactly 1 day delivery from the time you give go ahead. Please note that the quote is subject to further testing. I await your response. ********** To my surprise, I’m shocked beyond words, to receive a quote which states replacement of crankshaft sensor which totals to R3592.70 for the part and labour. Nothing in this email explains why the part needs to be replaced or what the cause of the computer fault is. No one calls me to explain anything. How on earth is this great customer service. Remember, I asked if everything was working perfectly fine on my car and whether all the parts are still in a very good condition, just about a month ago and received assurance that all is still perfectly intact. Have you guys thought, what if I could be stranded late at night, coming from work and this problem occurred and my life would be in danger, I don’t think you guys think of this as it’s seems to be just a money making situation. I’m utterly disgusted and beyond disappointed by this service. Your Milnerton Branch with manager and staff are the cause for the misinformation and this is such a huge inconvenience. You guys have

probably been ripping people off and this is your way of letting customers come back. This is outright ******ion. Now, I don’t need your Milnerton branch manager to contact me as I’ve already heard his nonsensical stories. Actions for Autoworks to take: 1. I need your Regional manager to contact me on ********** 786. 2. I don’t need to hear excuses, as I’ve already heard them, and no courtesy or concern has been expressed to me or my situation. 3. I’m not paying for the car to be fixed as I do not have the money as this is not planned in my budget. 4. This is something that could’ve been prevented, as your staff should’ve done a proper investigation and notified me of any issues with any other car parts. 5. I need my car fixed. 6. If the above is not actioned, I’m taking this matter further and not letting this slide.

Dear Mark,

I tried to get hold of you telephonically unsuccessfully. Your vehicle was serviced in March and we reported that the pencil coils need replacement. You returned your vehicle on 20th of July. After replacing the pencil coils we did not find any further faults on your vehicle and reported this to you. A month later, 22nd August your vehicle cut out. We found that the crank shaft position sensor is faulty. This is unrelated to replacing the pencil coils. It is an electronic component that can fail at any time without showing signs of possible failure before that.

Even though I understand your frustration of having to replace another component, I cannot fault my technician on their workmanship or diagnosis. Your vehicle is in a good condition, but we can only guarantee the parts that are replaced by us.

We did not invoice you for the diagnosis. The sensor comes from Hyundai and we did not add a markup on Hyundai's price for the sensor.

Please let us know, if you want to authorise the repair.

Kind regards

Gunther Schmitz

Director

Hi Gunther, Thank you for you response. Firstly, I told them after my service in March 2018 that my car was stalling intermittently, then they advised me that this was caused by the pencil coils. They gave me a quote and I saved up the required amount for the replacement to happen. I only replaced those coils based on the advise that this part (pencil coils) were responsible for the issue I had been having. Now, a month later after replacing the part which according to your technicians was the issue I get told that, no the actual problem is with the crankshaft sensors. Pay attention, in March when I reported to them that my car cuts out intermittently the solution was to repair the coils. This was done and still issue persisted. My car cutting out and stalling is not something that popped up now, I spoke about this before the coils were replaced. When I booked my car in last month, I specifically asked them to check the car to ensure that no other part needed replacement. When I picked my car up after the coils were done, your receptionist explicitly told me the technicians had a look and nothing else , keeping in mind the issue of my car stalling existed pre-coil replacement which means it should've been picked up then but it was not. Which clearly indicates that they didn’t check the car properly, because if they did then they would have informed me of this. When I took my car in this week, it took them less than two hours to find the fault which was there before pencil coils were replaced and was there when I took car for a service back in March. So first you charge me R5000 plus for the pencil coils which we now know was never the issue to begin with, less than a month later it is suddenly a different part ? How do I trust that this time you technicians are correct this time ? If my crankshaft sensors were the issue the whole time why did I have to pay R5000 plus for pencil coils ? Now you expect me to pay R3000 plus due to someone not doing their job back in March and then again not doing their job in July, it seems like I am paying and whoever is suppose to the work is not doing the work or perhaps they knew all along and just wanted me to take my money for the sake of revenue. Either way this is completely unacceptable. -Mark

HI Mark,

I will go look at the old diagnostic reports and printouts.

Can you please clarify what exactly the vehicle did before and after we replaced the pencil coils?

When you say the vehicle was stalling, did the vehicle loose power while driving or did it cut out while driving (the engine stopping completely and you have to restart). Did you ever struggle to start the car?

You mentioned that the problem persisted after we replaced the pencil coils. Who did you contact?

Once I've got the diagnostic reports I will have a clearer picture.

Kind regards

Gunther

Hi Gunther, Once again, thank you for your response. That would be a yes to all the above. In most cases when I am on the freeway and the car looses power completely but because my foot is on the accelerator it would just jerk and continue driving. There have been cases when the car looses power and I am at a red-light when my foot is off the accelerator than it cuts out. In these cases I just swing the key and it starts sometimes it doesn’t. One week before I replaced the coil pack I had an instance after work where it cut out and didn’t want to start for like 45 minutes. This is why I stressed that they double check to ensure they were replacing the right part and doesn’t seem like they did. This morning on my way to work the same thing happen luckily I could start it without waiting for a long time. I look forward to your resolution. Regards, -Mark

Good day Mr Spaas.
