An Extremely Disappointing Experience with Assetfin
I am extremely disappointed with my experience with Assetfin Finacial Solutions who provided the lease between me and Canon and would strongly encourage any business considering one of their printer agreements to read every single clause extremely carefully and obtain absolute clarity, in writing, on the cancellation and ownership terms before signing anything.
My agreement commenced on 1 April 2021. During the sales process, Assetfin representatives told me that the printer would ultimately be mine at the end of the lease. I re**** on that representation when entering into the agreement.
I also felt rushed through the signing process. The implications of the cancellation and renewal provisions were certainly not clearly explained to me.
Fast-forward several years: I gave Assetfin written notice in March 2026 that I wanted to cancel as the lease term had almost ended.
I am now being told that I am effectively tied in for another year because I didnt give 3 months notice to terminate.
What makes this particularly frustrating is the wording of Assetfin's own agreement. It says that if notice is not received before expiry of the Initial Period, the agreement automatically renews for a “subsequent 12 months”. It then states that the user may thereafter terminate on an anniversary of the commencement date by giving prior written notice.
If Assetfin intended such significant financial consequences, why were they not written in plain, unmistakable language?
I find it particularly troubling that a customer can expressly tell a company in writing that they want to cancel and make that clear prior to the end date, yet the company can apparently attempt to rely on an unclear contractual mechanism to keep that customer paying for another 12 months!
Add to this the fact that I entered the agreement believing, based on what I was told by the sales representatives, that the printer would ultimately belong to me, and the entire experience has left an exceptionally bitter taste.
I have now formally challenged Assetfin to identify the exact contractual wording that supposedly allows them to disregard my written cancellation and bind me to another full year.
For other business owners considering Assetfin: do not rely solely on what you are told during the sales process. Get every representation in writing, ask specifically who owns the equipment at the end, ask exactly how many times the contract can automatically renew, and ask what happens if cancellation notice is given outside their stipulated notice period.
After five years as a customer, I expected a reasonable and transparent approach when I notified them that I wished to leave. Instead, I am having to dispute the interpretation of an ambiguously worded agreement simply to end a service I have expressly said I no longer want and that was validly coming to an end.
A deeply disappointing way to treat a long-standing customer.
