Trying to make a quick buck

On the 20th of November 2016 my mothers fridge stopped working, thelights were commming on and there was power but the cooling system had stopped working. She saw an ad in the rising sun newspaper and contacted a man by the name of Lenny who is the owner of Appliance Genie Aircon & Appliance Specialist. He charged them R180 for a callout to asses the problem. On the 21st of November 2016 he and his assistant came through to the residence to do an assesment and determine what the fault was. He un*****ed the backof the fridge and puled out the main control board. My mother and father stood by and watched as he did this, he looked like he couldnt determine what the fault was and asked if he could take the fridge with him and get it repaired, my parents refused as they had a bad experience with another appliance that was taken away by somebody else and returned with missing parts. He then re-opended the control unit and had a look again, he said that something on the main board was burnt, when my mother asked what it was he showed he a place on the board that had to black *****s and said that something in that area had burnt out, he then told them that it would cost over R3000 to get repaired and then asked his assistant for a pair of pliers and said he needed it to put the control unit back it was then that my parents got suspicious as he didnt need it to put the control unit back into the fridge the first time, as he was putting it back he had his pliers on a wire and once the unit was almost in he cut the wire and then proceeded to ***** on the unit to the fridge. My mum and dad saw exactly what he did but were abit confused as not everybody knows exactly how appliances work. On his way out my father said maybe it just needs a regas, He then rudly rep**** with "if you have a car with a broken engine and you fill petrol in the car its still not going to work". My parents paid him for the callout and he left.

The following day they called another technician for a second opinion, he came through and had a look at the fridge. When he opened the control unit the first thing he asked was who cut the wire and you could clearly see it was by using a tool and not damaged by ware and tare. He then re-connected the wire and the fridge started working again. The wire that was cut turned out to be the wire that powers the compressor of the fridge and the fault was not with the control board but something else. The wire was cut just to make them think that the unit wasnt working so they could fork out over R3000.

Its a shame to think how many unsespecting people this has happened to because not everybody watches what a repairman is doing and after all they are the people who know everything about appliance repairs and we trust that they will do he right thing. Its people like Lenny and companies like Appliance Genie that give other appliance specialits a bad name. So everybody should always get a second opinion when it comes to getting anything reapired.
