Apple terrible after sales service

I bought an Apple iPad about 2 years ago I dropped it damaging only the screen I went to the Istore at Gateway to have the screen repaired they said they they don’t repair them I have to buy a new IPad it’s not cheap to keep on replacing the IPad all the time when only the screen is damaged and the IPad still works why should I have to buy a new iPad when only screen is damaged very disappointed because I only buy Apple products I have to seriously think twice about Apple product now going forward with terrible after sales service I cannot understand why thy cannot repair their products when only the screen is damaged
