Apple does NOT honour Warranty!

My father bought me a new MacBook Air in March this year to keep up with Online learning as A postgraduate UCT student.

4 months in , the MacBook Air screen started showing lines and then turned white and that was that!

Being a new laptop, I took it to Apple to get checked out and repaired, trusting my warranty to cover any defects. The laptop was pre-assessed before being shipped of for screen testing and the unit was found to be fine, save for a small ding in the corner from normal wear and tear.

The repair specialist then found that the screen was defective and needed to be replaced completely; I was SHOCKED to recieve a quote of R15000 in my email!?

I was informed that because of the dent (barely visible), the unit would not be covered by warranty. I then asked for the technician to confirm if there is ANY evidence to suggest that the screen damage was linked to either the ding or anything external I could have done; the answer I received was no, the screen just malfunctioned!

The laptop itself costs R16000 , yet Apple wants to charge a student R15000 for a screen repair of a 4 month old unit?? The warranty itself covers all damages to the defective unit regardless of normal wear and tear. The laptop has a hard cover case and a keyboard cover and the screen just stopped working mid use.

I am now sitting with a 4 month old shell that my father has to pay for and extremely disheartened by the sheer dishonesty of Apple. My laptop is under warranty, and therefore a screen defect should be covered by that warranty.

Do not waste your money on buying their laptops unless you’re willing to pay the price of a second laptop to repair their workmanship.
