GRUNDFOS SCALA2 VSD Pump

Warning on Grundfos Scala2 VSD Pump:

As a water tank system installer I purchase many different makes of pumps. API Grundfos Durban have had a special for a few years now on the Grundfos Scala 2 VSD pump, and I have purchased a number of these pumps from them.

Recently I had two Scala 2 pumps that have failed, I booked them both in for repair, both pumps had exactly the same problem namely a small hole on the impeller casing, both pumps were repaired under warranty.

After re-installation of these pumps both pumps failed again, this time mechanical seal failure causing water to enter the electrical motor and short out. Now this seems to me to be workmanship.

In addition to the mechanical seal failure, after 2 years the pumps showed signs of severe corrosion outside and inside the impeller housing, and it is my view that this was the reason for the mechanical seal failure.

I requested a warranty replacement claim which they did not honor, and did not agree to my view on why the pumps failed. I requested an independent review on the failure.

Their Specialist from Denmark gave his comments on the failure. In his response he clearly stated that the Scala2 should not be installed in a marine coastal belt which is on average about 150km inland. This indicates that the pumps are prone to corrosion, therefore should not be sold in such an environment. And I still believe that is the reason that when they opened the pumps for repair corrosion from inside damaged the mechanical seal.

They refuse to honor the replacement, which in my view is bad client relationship.

My advice to customers is DO NOT BUY THE GRUNDFOS SCALA2
