Formal Complaint Regarding Irreparable and Discontinued Wedding Ring

I am writing to formally lodge a complaint regarding a wedding ring purchased for my wife from American Swiss in 2020, and the subsequent service experience concerning its repair my dissatisfaction with the handling of my wife’s ring, which was purchased in 2020 for R19,999. The ring holds immense sentimental value, symbolizing our wedding bond, and its discontinuation combined with your inability to repair it has caused significant distress.

Recently, the ring required repair due crack in its gold and diamond hold mould. We brought the ring to the American Swiss store located at Mall of the South on the 3rd April 2025 Reff RE***. We were subsequently informed that the ring has been assessed as being beyond repair.

Furthermore, and compounding our disappointment, we were told that this specific ring model has been discontinued by American Swiss.

This situation presents us with significant challenges and distress for several reasons:

Sentimental Value: This ring is not merely a piece of jewellery; it is my wife's wedding ring, purchased in 2020 to signify our marriage bond. Its specific design holds immense sentimental value, representing the commitment we made. Expectation of Lifespan and Support: We purchased this ring less than five years ago with the reasonable expectation that a significant item like a wedding ring from a reputable jeweller such as American Swiss would have a substantial lifespan and that adequate repair support would be available for foreseeable issues. Learning that it is deemed irreparable after such a relatively short period is deeply concerning and falls short of our expectations regarding product quality and durability. Impact of Discontinuation: The fact that the ring model is now discontinued exacerbates the problem significantly. It eliminates the possibility of obtaining a like-for-like replacement, thereby breaking the continuity associated with her specific wedding ring. This adds considerably to our distress, as the unique symbol of our bond cannot simply be substituted. Lack of Viable Solution: We are left in a position where the original, sentimentally valuable ring cannot be repaired, and an identical replacement cannot be provided due to its discontinuation. This leaves us without a satisfactory resolution for an item purchased relatively recently. We are extremely disappointed with both the apparent lack of durability leading to the ring being irreparable after only four years, and the lack of long-term support for product lines, particularly for items as significant as wedding rings. The inability to repair, coupled with the discontinuation of the product, feels like a failure in customer and product support.

We request that American Swiss reconsider the assessment of the ring. If repair is absolutely impossible, we expect a resolution that acknowledges the circumstances, the sentimental value, and our consumer rights. We are open to discussing potential solutions, which could include:

A second opinion or attempt at repair by your most skilled jewellers. A replacement with a ring of equivalent value and similar style, chosen by my wife. Store credit or compensation reflecting the premature failure and inability to replace the specific item. Furthermore, my dissatisfaction extends to the handling of my request for a valuation certificate for the ring on the 12th April 2025 to collect the ring. I had previously contacted ASJ Mall of the South while the ring was understood to be at the workshop, explicitly stating that I required this document. Despite my clear communication, Sphamadla and Mbali failed to advise me on the correct procedure or any associated costs for obtaining the valuation at that time.

Instead, I was simply instructed to come into the store. Upon my arrival on 12 April 2025 I was then informed by Yolanda that only the workshop could provide the valuation certificate and that I would be expected to pay a fee for it.

I immediately expressed my grievance to Sphamandla and Yolanda: I am not prepared to pay for a valuation certificate when the failure to arrange or advise me correctly occurred on your staff's end, especially after I had proactively requested this information.

I insisted that they call the branch manager or someone with authority since the store was in the hands of no one with authority or supervisory delegation. After the call, I was told that the matter would be dealt with on Monday the 14th of April 2025. At the time of this email, no call was received and still no supervisor or branch manager was onsite, who leaves branch with no supervisory.

Please contact me at your earliest convenience as we look forward to your prompt response and a resolution that restores our faith in American Swiss.
