Tax certificate blues

Hi.

After submitting my tax return to SARS, they asked for supporting documuents including tax certificate from my provident fund detailing all my contributions to the fund for the financial year ending February 2017.

My employer referred me to Alexander Forbes as they administer our provident fund and the response I got there was pathetic to say the least. According to Alexander Forbes they only issue tax certificates if you withdraw from the fund or have received a lump sum from them which doesn't apply to me because I'm still contributing to the fund through my employer.

This cannot be right because when you contribute to a provident fund you still can incur tax liability which is offset at SARS by provision of an IT3 tax certificate.

For example, my medical aid service provider was able to provide me with such a certificate showing I've been contributing to the scheme the whole financial year. So the amount of contributions that appears on my IRP5 also appears on the tax certificate as far as my medical aid is concerned.

So if you follow my logic as per my example the provident fund amount on my IRP5 should also have a certificate that proves to SARS that I've been contributing, otherwise SARS holds me liable for not contributing my part of the provident fund while my employer does.

Please help.
