Akani Retirement Fund Administrators Chairman Z Letjane Unprofessional and Dismissive

I was at the Akani offices to hear about my deceased father's (MJ Mo***eng) pension. The group chairman Zamani Letjane is an arrongant and dismissive man who has no regard for anyone. He questioned my relationship with father of which he knows nothings of. He spoke of how his rules apply and he is a "sotho" and he will do things as a sotho man and he does not speak to "children" with an arrogant tone. He even questioned the integrity of my aunt being my father's sister and had the audacity to say that he wants to have a meeting with my father's partner's child and her father. On which grounds, once again he did not care to explain. I am disgusted that such an individual at his executive level can be so unprofessional and dismissive. I hope your arrogance sustains you Zamani and always remember "there is always a bigger fish than you".

I will pursue this matter to ensure that decisions are made in a fair and equitable manner.

 Ms. Refilwe Malindi attended at the MEPF offices together with others, pursuant to an invite by the Fund, to attend a meeting as a process leading up to the finalisation of the death benefit allocation to the rightful dependants, relating to her father’s death. During the discussions, Ms. Malindi made unfounded allegations in terms of which she was questioning the paternity of a minor child involved, which Mr. Letjane found to be inappropriate and in no uncertain terms told her that such kind of talk cannot be tolerated, as the Fund cannot entertain unfounded allegations. Mr. Letjane went further to say that if people’s paternity was to be questioned without any evidence, then everyone’s, including that of Ms. Malindi, could then be questioned. This was Mr. Letjane trying to drive the point home that without proper paternity test results, the Fund cannot be justified to entertain any unfounded allegations. Further, Mr. Letjane explained that when determining the rightful persons to consider during allocation of benefits, Section 37C of the Pension Funds Act apply and this section does not require any proof of paternity, but only proof that those claiming to be dependents were indeed dependent on the deceased.  Ms. Malindi, together with others attending the meeting, were informed that the Board of Trustees of the Fund would consider all the submissions and then decide on the allocations, guided by the provisions of Section 37C of the Act. It is unfortunate that Ms. Malindi is unhappy with the Fund processes, which are guided by the applicable legislation.
