Never use them, especially in SA.
I booked an Airbnb for a week. Following being unable to breathe in the place because of lack of l ventilation, the place being underground with no ability to open windows or doors or there even being a fan I had to leave at 11:30PM to another hotel. Not only was my health compromised but the next day when going back, I was attacked outside the apartment door which was inside the actual complex. As a young female, this lack of safety is detrimental and something I did not expect from Air BnB. I was to return to Durban for a family emergency but because of my compressed health and trauma from the attack, was unable to. The host refused to waiver his cancellation policy, and Airbnb was unable to assist in any way because according to them things were as were said. I’ve been left with medical bills, extra accommodation bills and not even a partial refund for not staying at a place for the entire duration of the week stay. I think this is crazy. With the GBV rates as high as they are, how do you allow a place to continue to operate when it is physically impossible to stay there and secondly, extremely unsafe.
Disappointed. If you are in South Africa I would suggest not using any AirBnBs, especially to ensure your safety. I will never be using them again
