Terrible experience with AIG
I have had a hospital plan policy with AIG for many years in terms of which I would receive payment of R600 for each night i spent in hospital. I did not claim on this policy for many years (possibly 10 years or more, I cannot recall exactly) because I did not go to hospital during that time. My first claim was during November 2018 for 3 nights which was settled with out fuss. Then during last year I spent 35 days in hospital which amounted to a large which was settled within a reasonable amount of time. Up to that point all I had to do when claiming was to prove that I had been in hospital and for how many days. All they needed was a copy of the hospital account which reflected date of admission and date of discharge. At that stage I thought AIG was great having settled my claims without any bother. However several months later I suffered a relapse and spent 16 days in hospital which amounted to a fairly sizable claim. As usual I submitted the hospital account which reflected the number of days I had been in hospital and thought this would suffice. However this time AIG had obviously had enough of my claiming and suddenly required a whole lot more information i.e. they requested a full copy of my hospital file including all notes and transcripts of the 3 doctors involved, of all the nurses notes etc. They also wanted copies of all laboratory reports arising from blood tests, all x-ray and scanning reports, reports of the doctors attending to me etc etc. I made enquiries with the hospital, the laboratory and the doctors and radiologists all of whom were extremely reluctant to make me copies of all this which would have amounted to hundreds of pages. They also informed me that there would be a cost involved of about R5 per copy resulting in a total cost which I estimated at about R1,200. I advised AIG that I could get all this with great difficulty and that it would cost them about R1,200. Unfortunately I was referred to the small print of the policy which gave AIG the right to request whatever medical documents they wanted at my cost. All this even though I had proved my stay in hospital and the duration thereof. At the time I was just not well enough to expedite the obtaining and collation of all these documents and abandoned the claim. In my view they made it as difficult as possible for me to put together the claim in the hope that I would abandon the claim. Needless to say I have cancelled the policy and will never deal with AIG again nor will I recommend them to anybody.
