Be careful of AIG
I traveled to China with my wife, sister and brother-in -law about 2 years ago. I took out insurance through Nedbank. I must say the worst service I ever received from an insurance company is AIG. Nedbank was no help as well. I learnt later that Nedbank had so many complaints about AIG that they dropped them. We booked through a travel company (Gateway Travel) in Cape Town. We were 12 in total. My nightmare started at Shanghai airport. The four of us were on one e-ticket. My wife's seat was cancelled without any explanation. I had to pay about R10,000.00 for a one way ticket from Shanghai to Beijing to catch the connecting flight to Joburg. It was a 2 hour flight. We flew on Air China. I am very skeptical of Air China because they refused to take responsibly of the cancellation. How is it possible that 4 passengers on one e-tkt and one gets cancelled. We arrived 3 hours before the flight. Three boarding passes issued and one cancelled??? When we got back AIG refused to pay one cent! I took out the top cover of insurance. The plane was delayed for 6 hours from Joburg. According to the policy we were to get re-reimbursed a certain amount. Not one cent. Ticket cancelled, not one cent. Just the run around. I contacted Air China 2 or 3 times. No response. Waste of time. I then turned to the travel company. They were very helpful They contacted Air China and after 2 months they gave me the refund and i had to sign a letter of indemnity. Be careful of Air China and I would not recomment AIG with a ten foot pole!!!

Please don’t make jokes! I know from my own experience that AIG has no respect for clients. To AIG to give the clients the run around means: “to treat our clients with anything except the highest regard. At AIG we take pride in ensuring our customers satisfaction” is a bad joke.
I dislike lies and misleading statements, and your above statement is just that! Lies and misleading statements! Same evil tactics to waste time and hassle the clients and make them frustrated and give up. I think that the mentors of your Customer Resolutions Team staff are Shylocks and Pinocchio. Beat around the bush. Then around the mulberry tree. And again the bush and so on and on.
I sent you the references of the policy number (FN: M1596/16L - MOOSA / NED633223CSA ) on the 28 Nov 2019, the same day Mr Mungroo phoned to ask me for the ref numbers. I spoke to Mr. Mungroo the next day to confirm he received my two emails with the docs. Followed it up with a phone call to Kenneth on the 28 Nov 2019. Both said they received it. They both wanted the emails that Gateway wrote to Air China. I told them I don’t have those. That was between Gateway and Air China. They wanted the letter of indemnity. I said I can’t attach it as it is in a format that my computer can’t attach it. But the email of Marilyn Lewis acknowledges Air China paid. See below. I asked for some compensation for the delay of over 6 hours. Zilch.
I gave the policy number: FN: M1596/16L - MOOSA / NED633223CSA.
It is also in the correspondence below 2016/07/05 2:08 PM. All the info with the policy docs etc, etc was sent by me to AIG in 2016.
I sent you the OSTI claim number: RE: Complaint Case: GCS-45636 A. MOOSA (OSTI).
I sent everything that was needed yet you have the audacity to ask me again and again the same documents! Please don’t deceive the people with your sugar coated words. Your assurances are empty words. Please take what I was supposed to receive and use it to go to the pub or shebeen and have drinks on me.

I can tell you that your reply is a just a "good publicity stunt”. If your intention was sincere then why was the first person who handled my claim taken off my case?
I kept sending emails and eventually another person was assigned to the case. He took a long while and then agreed to pay 50% of my claim. I agreed just to get closure. Then he was taken off! Why? Then all of a sudden another person was assigned and he revoked the 50% and said not one cent.
I told Mr. Mungroo that AIG is using the premiums to sponsor football teams in the millions, and don’t care about the clients that have genuine claims. It is all about name and publicity.
I rate AIG minus 100. I am being serious. A complete waste of time to insure with them. Please don’t bother to write a reply to trick the readers of Hello Peter because it will be the same nonsense.

Dear Mr Adriaan Lombard,
We refer to the above mentioned matter and the correspondence herein from the ombudsman’s office.
Upon review of the claim it is noted that the insured travelled in a group to China on a ticket which included him, his wife Hajiera, and two others all on the same e-ticket. The travel arrangements had all gone well until the insured came to the leg of the journey between Shanghai to Beijing on 26th May 2016, when he was informed by the airline officials that Hajiera's ticket was invalid. The insured queried this with the airline, but a supervisor informed him that she could do nothing to help other than recommending that he purchase another ticket for his wife. As there were no spaces left in economy, he had to purchase a first class ticket for his wife as had he not done this they would have missed the connecting flight back to Johannesburg.
As a result of the insured incurring the cost of this additional flight in the sum of RMB 3890.00, he contacted our Claims Department to claim back this cost. He also included in his claim the damage sustained to his wife's bag during the trip.
Upon receipt of the documentation, the insureds baggage claim was settled, but our Claims Department rejected the expenses in respect of the replacement air ticket, on the basis this did not fall within the Travel Delay or Missed Connection section of the policy.
To enable me to be in a position to consider which section of the policy may provide cover, I will require confirmation from the airline detailing the reasons as to why his wife was refused boarding.
We trust you find the above in order and await your response.
Kind Regards,
Marilyn Lewis
