AIG South Africa travel insurance not worth the paper it is written on
So I was travelling with my husband first week of May 2019 to Indonesia and we booked our flights through Emirates JHB to Dubai then forward to Jakarta. As you book you get offered an option to select travel insurance, I took it and it was with AIG SA. In the Policy Schedule it had a clause about baggage delay. I was happy because that is one of the main reasons most travellers miss their connecting flights as baggage takes so long at times to get to the carousel especially at these big airports. On check in at OR Tambo, JHB on 1st May we were told by the Check in person that we will get our luggage in Jakarta, I said why not Dubai then at least we know our luggage is with us going to Jakarta (we were going to land there on the 2nd May at 15:40 we got off the aircraft at 16:00). She answered reassuringly that no our luggage will not be lost. I agreed and we went on to board. Well let me tell you, now for free, the AIG Travel Guard Travel insurance is not going to cover you if your luggage takes too long to get to the carousel and it impacts you for your connecting flight, which in our case it took about 1 hour 35mins for our suitcases to finally emerge on the conveyor belt at Seokarno Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. Our connecting flight from Jakarta to Yogyjakarta was 18:05 we landed well on time from the Emirates Flight from Dubai and we had calculated our connection time. We landed at 15:40 got off the aircraft at 16:00, cleared customs in less than 15mins to collect luggage and that is when our journey soured. By the time we got to Lion Air they told us their check in is closed and that we can only get a flight the next day. We had to book on Garuda for us to get to Yogyjakarta where we had booked our accommodation as from the 2nd May. In essence Emirates could not give us a baggage delay certificate, because we did not go to the baggage counter to report on the day ( how could we if we are rushing to make our connecting flight?) AIG South Africa when I claimed they told me I am not covered yet I read the policy conditions and took it because it had mentioned luggage delay specifically. R482.56 down the drain plus R3890 worth of 2 airline tickets on Thai Lion Air lost and an additional R2479.49 incurred for the new tickets on Garuda Indonesia, In total we lost R6852.05 because of our luggage delaying to get to the carousel and my travel insurance tell me they will not pay as I am not covered. I must say that money was meant for our honeymoon and we just had to go by with what we had left.
