AIG are a disgrace to the insurance industry

I have been a client for over 14 years and have never claimed. I recently had to make a claim. (It is a minuscule daily amount for being in hospital). I get sent so many forms, demanding so much information that it is unacceptable. I can prove that my wife (it is a me and spouse plan) was in hospital and she had complications and ended up being in hospital for nearly 4 months. When I question their required information,I get sent a list of what they want. When I question it further, and speak to a claims manager on the phone she doesn't get back to me. Then I get a new list with increased requirements. The policy is supposed to pay a daily amount which may just possibly cover the fuel and parking to visit the hospital 3 times a day for nearly 4 months, but they want Blood test results, radiology reports. This is not a medical policy where they are paying for a hospital stay. The stay was caused by a critical illness, not something like plastic surgery. I have submitted a document from the hospital indicating admission and discharge dates. But they want all of this unacceptable and personal information. Why they need x-rays and blood test reports is beyond me. And the arrogance of their representatives who write and say, "At AIG we take pride in ensuring our customers satisfaction," when one is patently not satisfied is intolerable. This is a classic case of taking your premiums and doing everything in their power to avoid paying anything. And if you imagine that you can speak to someone in management, hah forget it. No one is ever available. AIG and their attitude is a disgrace.

It is very nice responding saying you will be in contact shortly. Please advise me what shortly means? This response was sent 36 hours ago. How does this contribute to customer satisfaction?

Dear Mr. Mills

Please accept our apologies for delayed response.

Due to the fact that we have now received your complaint to the Ombudsman for Long Term Insurance, there are protocols that are to be followed before we engage on your Hello Peter Review.

Kindly note that we will be responding to your concerns as soon as our office dealing with Ombud complaints gives direction as to how to move forward.

Kind regards,

However had your company responded appropriately instead of having a bombastic attitude, it would not have been necessary for me to complain to the long term insurance ombudsman at all. And in your initial response, you indicated that someone who would get hold of me, not necessarily in this public forum. We could have resolved this easily.

I have subsequent to this communication delivered further documentation, but the silence is deafening. You have my contact details, but as of this time, you have not made any attempt to contact me. I got quicker responses from your international office. I am now beginning to think that your way of dealing with people who complain to the OMBUD is to delay everything as much as possible in order to punish anyone who dares question your integrity. (Which I do in no uncertain terms).

So yesterday afternoon, I got a call from AIG indicating that they will be paying my claim. No matter what happens in the future, I feel AIG need to look long and hard at their customer service and ethical behaviour. A "trust" index of 2.4 out of 10 on this site is telling. And as a client, I feel that their way of dealing with issues is to punish anyone whop dares question them. Interestingly I got more support from their international complaints department than I got from their local department.
