No refund despite commitment from Afristay and Host to do so.
The person I spoke to at Afristay said that a refund would be arranged for me because of my ordeal but I have had no further details or refund despite their promise. Here are the details. A summary of the call and issue: I explained my story to the agent: I was told by Melody at Three Willows Self Catering Accommodation that the accommodation I booked was in fact double booked but that she had a similar room, just as nice but slightly smaller with a king size bed and good wifi on a router (I stressed that I needed good internet connection for my work as I was on a business trip). I agreed to the room before arriving, and paid in full, thinking it would be of the same standard as the room I actually booked on the Afristay website. When I arrived Melody told me that the room was in fact rented full time by a lady called Jacky who was away at the moment and her clothes were still in the cupboards. I was shocked. Melody then said that if I wanted wifi signal I would have to go to the bottom of the garden and place my 3G router on a pole and sit next to the pole, then it should work. I was horrified. Inside the room it was very smelly, the 'king size' bed turned out to be two single beds next to each other with a thin sheet over them - one bed slightly higher than the other. There was only a duvet cover and no duvet inner and the linen smelled of someone else's perfume/deodorant. The mosquito netting was massively torn which meant I would have had to either put up with the many mosquitoes or survive the smell in the room. There was also a man living in the room next door who kept shouting at the dog of one of the other residents on the property. It appeared to be more of a commune than a guesthouse except for two rooms upstairs (which I assume are the ones listed on Afristay) - both of which were rented out - one by a large group of truckers who within me being there for 10 minutes parked me in with their truck and spent most of their time swearing as I tried to leave the premiss. I left a message for Melody who didn't respond, telling her I wasn't happy with the room and that I had been parked in. I left as soon as I could and drove through the town looking for somewhere else to stay. Thankfully by 8pm I had found somewhere else to stay. It was quite an ordeal. I called Melody and thankfully she answered, she apologised and said I should contact Afristay for a full refund. I handed the key back to Melody's housekeeper (?) who gave me very dirty looks. I did not stay there and would not recommend it to anyone.
The agent responded: he sympathised and laughed with embarrassed (?) dismay at my ordeal, he apologised and said I would receive another call from a booking agent who would arrange the refund.
I have heard nothing further and the event occurred on 5 November 2018.
